This coffee is produced at the Karmachi Farm, owned by Tracon, in the Geisha area of Benchmaji Province, located in southwestern Ethiopia. The famous Geisha variety, a specialty coffee, is also said to have originated in Benchmaji Province. (This lot is not a Geisha variety.) The cherries harvested by the approximately 500 coffee farmers in the region are transported to Tracon's mill (processing plant), where they undergo the carbonic maceration process. The specific refining method involves placing the coffee cherries in a sealed stainless steel tank during the fermentation process, injecting carbon dioxide, and allowing the beans to ferment anaerobically for 10 days. Producers are also engaged in social and community development programs, such as building schools, health centers, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
